NeuroStar TMS therapy provides a modern treatment option for depression and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Many patients find that medications do not relieve their symptoms or cause intolerable side effects. If you are looking for a better treatment, NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy can help.

At The TMS Center of New Jersey, board-certified psychiatrist Dr. David Sikowitz meets with patients who have yet to find a treatment that works. He is an expert in the field of neuropsychiatry. If TMS therapy is right for you, he will discuss the process and answer your questions so you can make the right decision for your care.

What is TMS Therapy?

If you have never heard of TMS therapy, you are not alone. TMS stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation. It is a drug-free, shock-free, and non-surgical therapy for major depression and other mental disorders. The system uses magnetic pulses to produce tiny electrical currents in specific areas of your brain that do not function properly.

What is TMS Therapy?

These electric currents wake up nerve synapses and help them return to normal function. This process relieves depression, anxiety, or OCD. The electric currents created through magnets do not create the same type of electric shock used in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

The TMS Center of New Jersey first started using TMS therapy for depression in 2010. This happened shortly after the FDA cleared it for patients who did not respond to medications. More recently, the FDA cleared TMS use for adolescents aged 15 to 21 with depression and for adults with OCD. Doctors do not routinely use TMS therapy in patients with a seizure disorder. You should not use TMS if you have a cochlear implant or other implanted electrical devices like a pacemaker.

What is NeuroStar Advanced Therapy?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy for Mental Health uses TMS to stimulate nerve cells in the areas of your brain that control mood. As your brain responds, your neurotransmitter levels will normalize. Your depression or OCD symptoms will decrease*. For patients with depression who do not respond to medication, 83% report improvement and 62% reach remission.
