Depression Symptoms
Patients experience depression in different ways. However, the condition is typically characterized by a consistent state of sadness or a loss of the ability to experience pleasure. People with depression often struggle to engage with everyday activities or hobbies they previously enjoyed.
If you are concerned you may be experiencing depression symptoms, you do not have to go through this alone. Our providers at The TMS Center of New Jersey will review your symptoms—including their onset and duration—to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
Understanding Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, loss, or anger. Feeling sad and having the occasional rough day is a normal part of life, but if these feelings occur frequently or disrupt your daily routine, they may be symptoms of depression.
Depression can lead to mood or behavioral changes, such as:
Feeling more anger and irritability
Feeling restless
Feeling withdrawn or overly negative
Acting more impulsively
Feeling isolated from loved ones
You may notice this behavior yourself, or friends and family may bring it to your attention.
Common Symptoms of Depression
According to the standard diagnostic guidelines published by the American Psychiatric Association, depression is diagnosed when an individual experiences either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure, along with at least four of the following symptoms during the same two-week period:
Consistent low mood that is present most days
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities on most days
Significant weight loss or gain without dieting
Excessive sleepiness, fatigue, or insomnia almost every day
Restlessness or slowed movement nearly every day—noticeable to others
Feelings of worthlessness, or excessive and inappropriate guilt, nearly every day
Trouble concentrating—particularly if it is noticeable to others
Thoughts about or engaging in self-harm behaviors
Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Depression and Anxiety
Many patients experience depression and anxiety simultaneously. Anxiety is a feeling of fear, uneasiness, or overwhelm. The two mood disorders share symptoms, including restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances. Treatment, including that offered at TMS Center of New Jersey, can help you manage both your depression and anxiety symptoms.
Less Recognized Symptoms of Depression
Though not required for a diagnosis of depression, people who are dealing with the condition can also experience other symptoms. These include substance abuse, physical pain, sexual dysfunction, and neglect of personal hygiene. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms, it is crucial to speak with a medical professional.
